Walter Schmidt, who discovered the mountain bike for himself almost 30 years ago as one of the first in Breisgau, mixes up the 24-hour racing scene again with 70
When Walter came to us to Gundelfingen 7 years ago and asked about lighting, we were a bit amazed. At the age of almost 70 he wanted to train for a 24-hour solo race in the USA and he was still missing reliable headlights. The calm, self -confident look from his steel -blue eyes left no doubt: This man pulls through what he takes.
So we equipped Walter's bike with one of the first Supernova E3 Triple Dynamo Covers. Since then he has been a loyal supernova driver and a close friend of the house. Over the next few years, we gradually discovered that our extremely modest "bike Walter", as he is known here, is one of the very first mountain bike pioneers in the region.
The now 76-year-old former car mechanic and petrol station operator has had no car for 30 years and has been passing a bike for over 60 years. In 1989 he drove his Kuwahara Panther Mountainbike from Seattle to El Paso, he crossed the wilderness Alaskas and Canadas with his son From Anchorage to Calgary and finally discovered 24h races in 2008 by friends in Arizona as a new challenge. The experience was so memorable for him that again in 2009 and 2012 as a solo driver at the race in Tucson, Arizona. His next adventure will be a tour from Arizona to California, with a detour to the 2792 m high Mount Lemmon. We are looking forward to what you will experience and wish you every success, Walter!
