NEW SWISS LAW FOR E-BIKE RIDERS

24/02/2022

According to the Swiss Federal Council, all E-bikes, i.e., S-pedelecs (with assistance up to 45 km/h) and pedelecs (with assistance up to 25 km/h) must use daytime running lights from April 1st, 2022.

The aim is to increase visibility in road traffic and off-road conditions to avoid accidents. From April onwards, E-bike riders who ride during the day without lights that are functioning and switched on can be fined 20 CHF. The good news is that all SUPERNOVA E-bike headlights on the market comply with this new legislation!

What does this mean in practical terms?

In the future - if you already have a front light - it must be switched on during the day. (It is mandatory to have a front light fitted to your bike - otherwise, you will be fined.) City pedelecs are usually sold fully equipped with a lighting system, but E-MTBs, E-racing bikes, and E-gravel bikes are often marketed as sports equipment and sometimes lack lights. The law-change extends to these types of E-bikes as well!

In addition, you should be aware that the obligation to use daytime running lights also applies to riding on forest paths and trails because these are primarily public roads. So, if you only ride your E-MTB outside in nature, you still need to use lights on your bike at all times!

What tests have shown

SUPERNOVA's real-world tests have shown that E-bikes should always have a bright, clearly visible light at all times, simply because of the speed at which they are ridden. If lights are already installed on your bike, you should ask yourself if upgrading to a higher-quality light would be better and safer.

The Swiss road code requires that the light must be "visible at 100 meters in good weather conditions" and at the same time "should not dazzle."

Front lights from SUPERNOVA are glare-free with an enormous range. They also have a low beam and a high beam mode - which increases the safety factor even more.

Here is an example: In the class, up to 25 km/h, you can use the SUPERNOVA MINI 2 PRO and M99 MINI PRO front lights. For the type, up to 45 km/h, the M99 PRO and its soon-to-be-released successor are worth considering, or even the smaller M99 MINI PRO.

The glistening and distinctive arcs of the M99 series have shown just how beautiful daytime running lights can look on an electric bike. You can arrive safely and look stylish simultaneously; what more would you want?

For those who still have older E-bikes without adequate power for battery headlights: our new M99 DY PRO allows you to upgrade these bikes to include a high beam. All you need is a dynamo on the front wheel. The brightness of the completely battery-free light is comparable to our E-bike front lights. The DY PRO will be available soon; you can pre-order it now!
