Our 7-point plan
Become the most sustainable lighting brand
SUPERNOVA wants to be the most sustainable lighting brand. To achieve this goal, we need meaningful and signiocant intermediate goals. These are important both for internal motivation and for transparency towards customers and the interested public. However, we will not set ourselves comprehensive targets and communicate them to the outside world until 2024. The reason for this is that meaningful targets should be based on solid data and we are currently still collecting this data in some areas.
Current goals
Plastic free packaging
At the beginning of the year, we launched the “Plastic-free 2024” project. The aim: to ban all avoidable plastic between our suppliers and our end customers by the end of 2024.
Product Carbon Footprints
As an example, we have already created product carbon footprints for 3 of our bicycle lights and are planning to implement them for at least 3 more products this year alone.
Energy management – Go Green
With the support of our partner Energieagentur Freiburg, we are analyzing our energy consumption and want to reduce it even further by installing a photovoltaic system for production.
Energy agency FreiburgProtect human rights
SUPERNOVA is fully committed to the core labor standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO). To ensure compliance with these standards, we are working on establishing a reporting mechanism in our supply chain.

First sustainability report
First sustainability report
Due to its size, SUPERNOVA is not actually obliged to prepare a sustainability report. Nevertheless, we have decided to do so. It is important for us to be transparent about what we do and for our customers to see what we do. For this reason, we have also decided to base the sustainability report on the criteria of the German Sustainability Code (DNK) to enable comparability.

A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) measures the total greenhouse gas emissions generated during the life cycle of a product. Together with Energie Agentur Freiburg, we have created PCFs for three of our products for the first time. We were surprised to see that the greatest CO2 consumption of our lights is generated during use and not during production.
For example, the MINI 3 PRO has a CO2 footprint of 10.61 kg CO2e over a life cycle of 10 years from production, use (30 minutes a day for 10 years, 10% of which the bike is operated with high beam) and disposal. Here, 79.7% of the emissions are generated during use and not during production.

As a company, we also track our waste volumes. By switching to recyclable cardboard packaging instead of plastic, we have been able to significantly reduce the proportion of mixed waste and cardboard packaging. Overall, we were able to reduce our total waste from 12.28 tons to 5.30 tons between 2021 and 2023.

For a company that sets the standard that it is based on the three pillars of design, quality, and sustainability, it is accordingly important that all products meet sustainability requirements. This includes the supply chain. For our first sustainability report, we analyzed the supply chain of our direct suppliers (Tier 1) for the M99 PRO 2 front light and found that 91% of all components are supplied to us directly by German companies.
