Much More Than Reforestation: The SUPERNOVA Forest
22/12/2023
The time has come: soon the first seedlings grow for our supernova forest in Costa Rica! Together with the Bosque Azul Association, we have completely new paths in terms of climate protection. In contrast to reforestation approaches that promote monocultures and ignore biodiversity, we rely on a selection of endangered local tree species. This wants to support the existing ecosystem and create a diverse habitat for animals and humans. In order to be able to integrate the local population over generations, we want to win them from the beginning. Other priorities are therefore on promoting women and environmental education.
What is that Starting point?
Climate change threatens life on earth!
We observe an unstoppable increase the CO2 emissions, the temperatures andD the resulting threatening extreme weather conditions. At the same time, we experience a disaster loss of biodiversity.
One of the most serious phenomena of our time that drives climate change is the destruction of huge rainforest areas. Already today the episode irretrievably disappears 150 animal and plant species. (Source: https://www.greenpeace.de/biodiversitaet/artenkrise/artensterben)
In order to reach the 1.5-degree climate center beyond 2030, we all have to make a massive effort. If the temperature then rises again to over 1.5 degrees, a lot is at stake. According to the WWF, the threats increase exponentially (source: https://www.wwf.at/artikel/folgen-der-klimakrise-15-grad-oder-2-grad, Supernova diagram):
The topic of sustainable business is therefore very important to us and we looked for a way to contribute to solutions. In 2023 we were able to set important milestones for our sustainability strategy at Supernova:
- We brought an expert in sustainability to our team,
- developed a 7-point plan for sustainability,
- are a CO2 reduction project joined that the federal government is funded and Now determine the precise CO2 footprint of our lampsproduction.
A clever solution to protect climate and biodiversity
Are we satisfied with it? No! It is clear to us that that's not enough. We thought about how we can reduce emissions at the same time and contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. The reforestation in the tropics with endangered tree species on it offers a great answer!
We are convinced that it is possible to reduce our CO2 consumption to a minimum and at the same time do species -rich reforestation!
Why biodiversity is important
Rainforests in the tropics have a major impact on the global weather system and have an incomparably higher biodiversity than our domestic forests.
The jungle is a source of a variety of medically valuable substances that have not yet been discovered. Instead, we run the risk that these unexplored treasures will be lost forever!
An example in the Central American rainforest is certainly the endangered gigantic alpine bobbing tree, which grows high above other tree species and is almost its own ecosystem. Numerous animals and plants live from this tree and its fruits, including the red ARA-Papage threatened by extinction.
Why do many reforestation projects fail?
In our opinion, one main reason for this is your concept. In particular, we have the following criticisms:
- SHost often only 3-4 particularly rapidly growing varieties selectedthat bind a lot of CO2 within a very short time, but the biodiversity remains on the route (Monoculture)
- Many trees are planted, their health and robustness is secondary (Quantity before quality)
- Kommercial attractive Species are preferred and displaced originally native species
- To the animal world on site become U.Nfitde Plant selected
- Neglect the seedlings in the first few months After their planting
Why Costa Rica and not the Black Forest?
What happens in the domestic forest in a hundred years is created in the rainforest in approximately only 10-20 Years. That applies to the CO2 binding as well as For the creation of a biological habitat.
That is precisely why we decided to participate in a reforestation project in the tropical rainforest. Through our membership at Bpm (Biodiversity Partnerhip Mesoamerica) have we experience, How important the preservation of these forests and theirs Biodiversity for humanity is. This also gave us up an interesting and sympathetic Association in Costa Rica: Bosque Azul, on DEutsch “Blue forest”. Bosque Azul was from Monica and Michael Hall from Emmendingen (Black Forest) in life called, To together with the people from the Regarding the forest landscape again.
In addition, Costa Rica is an ideal location for such a project, because the country has ideal weather conditions similar to a greenhouse and also offers many suitable former cattle willows for reforestation. It was important to us to find the right project - a project that supports biodiversity, does not pursue a commercial interest and incorporate the local population. As one of the socially and politically stable countries in Central America, the peaceful Costa Rica is our preferred location.
This is what the wasteland lying looks like, on which the afforestation is to begin in 2024.
What will the Supernova forest look like?
The special thing about the Bosque Azulist Association is the combination of reforestation, ecological agriculture and social solution models. His goals also include environmental education and promoting local women's entrepreneurs. The sustainable success of the project can be guaranteed by collaboration with committed on site.
Due to the development and fusion of several landscape zones, a biological corridor in the area is to be combined in the area of the forest areas and thus enables the survival of endangered species. There is reforestation with numerous local tree species.
We will regularly about the progress And report the challenges ...
