On your bikes, ready, go!

Hello everyone,

As the founder and CEO of SUPERNOVA, I invite you to find out more about our activities in the area of sustainability. As an enthusiastic cyclist since childhood, I have always been very close to nature and quickly realized how important it is to protect it. The bicycle is the driving force behind SUPERNOVA and plays a key role in shaping our philosophy and products. Making sustainable decisions within the company is only natural given our focus on environmentally friendly transportation.

This page is intended to give you an insight into what our decisions were, what results they have led to and what we can do better in the future. I am delighted if the report prompts questions and we can enter into a dialog. Let’s pave the way for more sustainability in the bicycle industry together and let8s inspire other people to embrace environmentally friendly mobility - best wishes from the Black Forest!

Become the most sustainable lighting brand

SUPERNOVA wants to be the most sustainable lighting brand. To achieve this goal, we need meaningful and signiocant intermediate goals. These are important both for internal motivation and for transparency towards customers and the interested public. However, we will not set ourselves comprehensive targets and communicate them to the outside world until 2024. The reason for this is that meaningful targets should be based on solid data and we are currently still collecting this data in some areas.

Current goals

Image_Ziel_Desktop-Mobile_1920x1920_01.png

Plastic free packaging

At the beginning of the year, we launched the “Plastic-free 2024” project. The aim: to ban all avoidable plastic between our suppliers and our end customers by the end of 2024.

Product Carbon Footprints

As an example, we have already created product carbon footprints for 3 of our bicycle lights and are planning to implement them for at least 3 more products this year alone.

Energy management – Go Green

With the support of our partner Energieagentur Freiburg, we are analyzing our energy consumption and want to reduce it even further by installing a photovoltaic system for production.

Protect human rights

SUPERNOVA is fully committed to the core labor standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO). To ensure compliance with these standards, we are working on establishing a reporting mechanism in our supply chain.

First sustainability report

Due to its size, SUPERNOVA is not actually obliged to prepare a sustainability report. Nevertheless, we have decided to do so. It is important for us to be transparent about what we do and for our customers to see what we do. For this reason, we have also decided to base the sustainability report on the criteria of the German Sustainability Code (DNK) to enable comparability.

A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) measures the total greenhouse gas emissions generated during the life cycle of a product. Together with Energie Agentur Freiburg, we have created PCFs for three of our products for the first time. We were surprised to see that the greatest CO2 consumption of our lights is generated during use and not during production.

For example, the MINI 3 PRO has a CO2 footprint of 10.61 kg CO2e over a life cycle of 10 years from production, use (30 minutes a day for 10 years, 10% of which the bike is operated with high beam) and disposal. Here, 79.7% of the emissions are generated during use and not during production.

As a company, we also track our waste volumes. By switching to recyclable cardboard packaging instead of plastic, we have been able to significantly reduce the proportion of mixed waste and cardboard packaging. Overall, we were able to reduce our total waste from 12.28 tons to 5.30 tons between 2021 and 2023.

For a company that sets the standard that it is based on the three pillars of design, quality, and sustainability, it is accordingly important that all products meet sustainability requirements. This includes the supply chain. For our first sustainability report, we analyzed the supply chain of our direct suppliers (Tier 1) for the M99 PRO 2 front light and found that 91% of all components are supplied to us directly by German companies.

Green Power & E-Vehicles

Our production facility in Gundelfingen uses only Greenpeace Energy green electricity from wind and hydropower and heats with wind gas. Here, surplus wind power is converted into hydrogen and fed into the natural gas grid as climate-neutral gas. Greenpeace Energy uses a share of the proceeds to invest in the further expansion of renewable energies. In addition, the last car with an internal combustion engine was eliminated at Supernova in August 2019. Our vehicle fleet consists exclusively of electric vehicles. An in-house electric charging station serves employees and customers alike. Most of us cycle to work and are supported by Supernova with leased bikes.

Longevity as a core principle of sustainability: our focus is on producing lighting systems that will provide reliable service for at least a decade under the toughest conditions. A long-lasting light also means less resource consumption, less waste and a smaller ecological footprint. We have been doing this for over 20 years! Our service promise is therefore: 5 years guarantee and at least 10 years repairability for all lighting systems! That is far more than the statutory warranty!

Environmentally friendly materials & climate neutral shipping

We take care not to use materials that are harmful to the environment. For example, our product range is free of PVC, which is classified as carcinogenic and produces highly toxic dioxins when incinerated. In our day-to-day work, we try to avoid plastic waste. Thanks to our new drinking water treatment system, thousands of plastic bottles are saved every year and whenever you order a Supernova product from us, it arrives via CO2-neutral shipping in environmentally friendly packaging. We work together with DHL and UPS and take care of the CO2 compensation for you.
